Writing Exercise-German General Subjunctive (Konjunktiv II)
Stephen Sovenyhazy April 22, 2024
Vocabulary:
der Marathon(s) – the marathon
kommentieren – to comment
geeignet sein – to be suited/suitable for
bewundern – to admire
die Willenskraft(kräfte) – the willpower
in den Kopf setzen – to set out to do
der Ansporn – the incentive
Questions: 1. When was Konjunktiv II used?
2. How long has his wife been training for the marathon?
3. Why isn’t he joining her?
4. What does he admire about his wife?
5. What would it take for him to give up chocolate?
Answers: 1. Ich könnte as nicht (I couldn’t do that), Ich wäre nicht geeignet (I wouldn’t be suited), wenn ich fitter wäre, fände ich (even if I was fitter, I would find…), Das wäre (that would be), Ich würde nicht wollen (I wouldn’t want to), Ich würde benötigen (I would need), wenn mir jemand geben würde (If someone gave me), dann würde ich mitlaufen (I would join/run along), würde ich sogar aufgeben
2. She has been training for five months.
3. He thinks the idea of running for 4 hours is silly, and he doesn’t want to give up chocolate.
4. He admires her willpower.
5. He would give up chocolate for 2 million Euros.
