¿Quieres Empezar a Aprender Inglés?

“No… speak… inglés.”
“Todo el mundo habla inglés! Menos… yo.”
“Si solo pudiera entenderle un poco…”
¿Son pensamientos tuyos? ¿Te has preguntado alguna vez cuántas oportunidades te abrirían si pudieras tener una conversación básica en inglés? Sientes la frustración de no poder hablarles bien a los suegros americanos o no poder pedir dirección en la gasolinera? Seguro que te ha pasado una situación similar.
El idioma inglés es el más hablado del mundo, pero eso ya lo sabías, ¿no? Pero aprender un idioma nos parece un gran trabajo y muchas veces no sabemos por dónde empezar. ¿Quieres saber el secreto de conseguir fluidez en una sola semana? ¡No lo hay! Si solo fuera tan fácil.
Pero hay unos pasos simples que puedes emplear para prender el viaje. No son secretos, ni son “arregla-todo”s. Pero si quieres empezar a aprender inglés estos pasos te van a ayudar.
1. Empieza
¡Sí, me escuchaste correcto! Empezar es un consejo válido. Tomar el primer paso de cualquier trabajo siempre es lo más difícil. ¡Hasta yo escribiendo este artículo me duró más tiempo en empezarlo que en escribir la cosa entera! Pero sea lo que sea la cosa difícil que no queremos enfrentar, siempre se siente un gran alivio al concentrarnos en hacer la cosa intimidante.
2. Siéntate a ver la tele
Pero… ¡¿qué?! Admítelo, lo quieres hacer y es la forma más fácil de empezar a asimilar un idioma nuevo. La verdad es que escucharlo es la manera más fácil de interactuar con un idioma desconocido. ¿Conoces los cuatro modos de comunicación?

Cuando aprendemos, siempre nos atrae primero los modos de comunicación de entender el idioma (escuchar y leer) antes de producirlo (hablar y escribir). Es porque son pasivos y requieren menos esfuerzo para dominar. ¿Cuál te sería más fácil… escucharle a una persona hablándote en inglés e indicarles sí o no, etc O… intentar a formar una pregunta o una oración entendible en inglés?
Claro, que escuchando puedes reconocer el sonido y el mensaje del locutor e indicarles que continúen, que te den más información, o que no entendiste y necesitan encontrar otra forma de comunicar su mensaje.
Entonces, viendo series populares en inglés… The Office, Friends, Breaking Bad, (Okay… vale. Que estos son MIS favoritos pero hay muchos más.) puedes empezar a conectar el sonido de palabras con los subtítulos y así vas aprendiendo el idioma en forma de conversaciones. ¿Por qué empezar académicamente cuando puedes disfrutar de un show de horror o de comedia o romance y a la vez estar aprendiendo?
3. Hazte amigos angloparlantes
Ahora vamos a la cosa que a unos de nosotros nos parece muy divertida y a otros, ¡nos hace querer escondernos! Cada cual tiene su situación y preferencia diferente y puede ser más fácil para unos de nosotros hacernos amigos o estar en contacto con más angloparlantes. ¿Tienes un niño o sobrino que ya domina bastante bien el idioma inglés? Esfuérzate a hablarles más en inglés que en español. ¿Podrías conocer a tu vecino y hablarle en inglés un poco de vez en cuando? Parece un poco pasado de moda, pero de verdad te cuento que fue la manera en que yo empecé a conversar en español cuando a los 15 años estaba explorando lo básico de español con una clase en el colegio. Aunque puede ser un poco incómodo, con una persona amable y paciente, te puede beneficiar muchísimo.

También estas páginas ofrecen unos videos y audios, pero siempre puedes encontrar otros videos del mismo tema en youtube que te ayuden a entender de forma diferente o de un profesor que te guste más que a otro.
5. Toma clases
Aquí en CORE Languages, especializamos en ayudarte con el deseo que tienes de aprender inglés. Are these your thoughts? Have you asked yourself how many opportunities would open up to you if you could have a basic conversation in English? Start
Yes, you heard correctly! Beginning is a valid piece of advice. Taking the first step in any task is always the most difficult. Even in writing this article, I took more time to start it than to write the whole thing! But whatever the challenging thing that we don’t want to face, we always feel a great relief when we concentrate on doing the intimidating thing.
Sit down and watch tv
But… what?! Admit it, you want to, and it’s the easiest way to begin to intake a new language. The truth is that listening to it is the easiest way to interact with it an unknown language. Do you know the four modes of communication?

When we learn, we are always first attracted to the understanding modes of communication (listening and reading) before producing it (speaking and writing). This is because they are passive and require less effort to dominate. What would be easier for you… listening to a person speaking to you in English and indicating yes or no, etc OR… trying to form an understandable question or sentence? Obviously by listening you can recognize the sound and message of the speaker and indicate to them to continue, give you more information, or that you did not understand and need to find another way to communicate the message.
So, by watching popular series in English… The Office, Friends, Breaking Bad, (Okay… right. These are some of MY favorites, but there are many more.) You can begin to connect the sound of the words with the subtitles and thus be learning the language in the form of conversations. Why start academically when you can enjoy a horror or comedy or romance at the same time as learning?
Make English speaking friends
Now we get to the thing that seems fun to some of us and for others of us, makes us want to hide! Everyone has their situation and different preference, and it can be easier for some of us to make friends or be in contact with more English speakers than others. Do you have a child or a niece or nephew that already has a good command of English? Make an effort to speak with them more in English than in Spanish. Could you meet your neighbor and speak with them every once in a while in English? It may feel a little old fashioned, but this was actually the way I began to converse in Spanish when at 15 years old, when I was exploring the basics of Spanish with a class in high school. Although it can be a little uncomfortable, with a kind and patient person, it can be very beneficial.
