Learn about French A1 Topics

CORE Languages follows the CEFR standard for teaching foreign languages. That means we are required to teach specific topics in each level. In order to make learning more manageable, we have broken each level down into 4 short courses.

CORE Languages offers bite size courses lasting about 10 weeks each. We split A1.1 into two courses to offer flexibility for your scheduling and the option to review specific topics without repeating a much longer course.
  • Level 1-1 is a course designed for the true beginner, someone who has had no previous experience with the French language. It covers basic vocabulary, the differences between être and avoir, and introduces regular verbs ending in -er in the present tense. The activities in Level 1 focus on helping each student to speak French, using a controlled and limited vocabulary.
  • Level 1-2 continues to focus on the present tense and teaches students how to use regular verbs ending in -ir and -re, reflexive verbs as well as common irregular verbs. It also introduces the near future, prepositions of place, demonstratives and specialized vocabulary.

After completing these levels, you’ll be able to:

  • understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.

  • introduce yourself and others and ask and answer questions about personal details such as where they live, people they know and things they have.

  • interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

CEFR Level: French A1.2

French Demonstrative Adjectives

In French, things get a little trickier. As in English, French, demonstrative adjectives must agree in number with the noun they modify, but they must also agree in gender. Once you've determined the number and gender of a noun in French, you can choose the correct demonstrative adjective form to use.
