A 4th of July Tradition- Cole Slaw

The next big holiday in the United States is, to some, the biggest of them all. July 4th is a day of celebration of when the United States declared independence from Great Britain. Celebrations usually include gatherings of family, friends, and even whole cities. Celebrations would not be complete without food, drinks, flags, and fireworks! This recipe is for a traditional side dish at a typical American cookout or barbecue. Although it includes many of the main ingredients of the El Salvadorean Curtido de Repollo, the taste could not be more different of this 4th of July tradition- cole slaw.

Canva Design DAFEbbh_RO0Although you could opt to buy all the ingredients for this recipe individually, that would defeat the purpose of labeling it an easy recipe. Grab a bag of prepackaged cole slaw mix to get started. You will also need a large bowl and spoon as well.

Ingredients:

1 package tri-color cole slaw (green cabbage, purple cabbage, and carrots) from refrigerated salad section

1/2 cup mayonnaise

1/4 tsp mustard

2 TB white vinegar

2 1/2 TB sugar

1/4 tsp salt

pepper to taste (optional)

Canva Design DAFEblryOs0Directions:

1. Empty contents of the prepackaged cole slaw mix into large bowl.

2. Add mayonnaise, mustard, and vinegar to the bowl.

3. Mix ingredients with a spoon.

4. Add sugar, salt, and optionally add pepper to taste.

5. Mix all ingredients thoroughly.

6. Place in refrigerator to allow cole slaw to chill and marinate. For best results, leave in fridge overnight before serving.

Canva Design DAFEbjWE-X8As promised, this side dish recipe is very quick and easy. Your guests will thank you. Some may eat it as a side dish, some may add it to their burger. All will marvel at the fact that you made some homemade cole slaw just for them. Ok, so maybe they won’t, but at least you can feel the satisfaction of having made your own instead of yet again settling for the store-bought version. So, grab a burger, get some cole slaw, light some fireworks, and enjoy your next 4th of July!
